The one thing to remember
In the Quran, the title comes after the test. Ibrāhīm was tried before he was made a leader, Dāwūd was unknown before he was a king, Mūsā was protected long before he was a messenger. If you are being tested, held back, or kept going against the odds, you may be in the preparing part of the story.
There are seasons when nothing seems to move. You pray, you work, you wait, and life keeps pressing on the same sore spot. It is easy to read that as Allah being far from you. The Quran reads it differently. Again and again, the people Allah raised went through a season of preparation first, and from the inside it looked a lot like what you might be going through now.
Here are five patterns from their stories. None of them is a guarantee of a particular outcome in this world. But each one is a reason to keep going.
1. You are being tested before you are given
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Abraham was tried by his Lord with words [i.e., commands] and he fulfilled them. [Allāh] said, "Indeed, I will make you a leader for the people." [Abraham] said, "And of my descendants?" [Allāh] said, "My covenant does not include the wrongdoers."
Read the order: Ibrāhīm was tried, he fulfilled the commands, and only then came “Indeed, I will make you a leader for the people.” The title came after the tests.
Classical commentators list what those tests were: leaving his father's idols, the fire, leaving his family in a barren valley, the command concerning his son. Each one was the thing he loved most, or feared most, put in front of him. He did not get the title and then learn to carry it. He learned to carry it, and then received it.
The Prophet ﷺ said the people most severely tested are the prophets, then those most like them, and that a person is tested according to his religion (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2398, graded hasan sahih). A heavy test is not a sign that you are forgotten. It can be a sign that you are being built for weight.
Notice the end of the same ayah, though. Ibrāhīm asked about his descendants, and Allah answered: “My covenant does not include the wrongdoers.” Being raised is not automatic. It belongs to those who pass the test with their integrity intact.
2. Your circle is getting smaller
And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His face [i.e., acceptance]. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever [in] neglect.
This was said to the Prophet ﷺ himself, when powerful men of Quraysh wanted him to push away the poor believers before they would sit with him. Allah told him to stay with the ones who remember Him.
Sometimes the people around you fall away, and it hurts. Sometimes you are the one who stops going to certain places, or finds old conversations empty. That narrowing can be Allah clearing space around you. The Prophet ﷺ said: “A man is upon the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look at whom he befriends” (Sunan Abi Dawud 4833, graded hasan).
A smaller circle is not a punishment if it is a better one. Look for the people this ayah describes: those who call on their Lord in the morning and the evening. Two of them are worth more than a crowd who make you forget Him.
3. You are starting small, and nobody is watching
When Ṭālūt's army reached Goliath, most of it had already fallen away at the river test, and those left said, “There is no power for us today against Goliath and his soldiers.” The ones with certainty answered: “How many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of Allāh. And Allāh is with the patient” (2:249).
So they defeated them by permission of Allāh, and David killed Goliath, and Allāh gave him the kingship and wisdom [i.e., prophethood] and taught him from that which He willed. And if it were not for Allāh checking [some] people by means of others, the earth would have been corrupted, but Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the worlds.
Dāwūd was not yet a king or a known prophet when he faced Goliath. He was one soldier in a small army that nobody expected to win. The kingship and wisdom came after.
If your effort right now is unseen, unpaid, unpraised, that is not wasted time. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah loves the servant who is mindful of Him, content, and hidden” (Sahih Muslim 2965). Hidden work is where sincerity is built, because there is no one to perform for except Allah.
4. You were protected where you should have been destroyed
Think of Mūsā's mother, told by Allah to place her baby in a chest and put it in the river (28:7). Every instinct in her would have screamed against it. And the river carried him straight into the house of the man who was killing baby boys.
[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me that you would be brought up under My eye [i.e., observation and care].
Allah put love for Mūsā in the hearts of those who saw him, so that even Pharaoh's household wanted to keep him. And he was raised under My eye, under Allah's own care.
Years later, after exile and hard years in Madyan, Allah said to him: “Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses” (20:40). Every detour had been on schedule.
Look back at your own life. The accident that could have been worse. The door that closed and saved you from something you only understood later. The relationship that ended before it ruined you. You may not have noticed it at the time, but you were being carried.
5. You feel like quitting, but you keep going
And how many a prophet [fought in battle and] with him fought many religious scholars. But they never lost assurance due to what afflicted them in the cause of Allāh, nor did they weaken or submit. And Allāh loves the steadfast.
They were hurt and they felt it. What they refused to do was lose heart, weaken, or give in. Allah did not say He loves those who never struggle. He said He loves the steadfast.
Even the best of people reached the edge. Allah describes believers before us who were “shaken until [even their] messenger and those who believed with him said, ‘When is the help of Allāh?’ Unquestionably, the help of Allāh is near” (2:214). Feeling like you cannot go on is not failure. Still showing up the next morning is the very thing Allah loves.
What the something big really is
Sometimes the something big is visible in this world: a door opens, a role comes, a prayer is answered exactly as you asked. Sometimes it is who you become: more patient, more sincere, closer to Him. And sometimes it is kept for the Hereafter, where it is far bigger than anything here.
“How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for all of it is good, and that is for no one except the believer. If good comes to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If harm befalls him, he is patient, and that is good for him.”
So whichever of the five you are in right now, you are not wasting time. Ease is already with your hardship, not just after it. That is the meaning of with hardship comes ease. And if the weight is turning into worry, start with what the Quran says to an anxious heart.
A common mix-up
What people often think
If you are going through hardship, it is a guaranteed sign that a big worldly breakthrough is coming soon.
What the sources show
The Quran promises that trials have meaning and that Allah's help is near (2:214), but not a specific outcome on our timeline. Trials can raise your rank, expiate sins and shape who you become, and the greatest reward may be in the Hereafter. What is guaranteed is that patience and gratitude are good for the believer either way (Sahih Muslim 2999).
The ayahs behind this
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Abraham was tried by his Lord with words [i.e., commands] and he fulfilled them. [Allāh] said, "Indeed, I will make you a leader for the people." [Abraham] said, "And of my descendants?" [Allāh] said, "My covenant does not include the wrongdoers."
Ibrāhīm was tested with commands and fulfilled them. Only then: I will make you a leader.
Keep yourself patient with those who call on their Lord morning and evening.
A young soldier no one expected kills Goliath, and Allah gives him kingship and wisdom.
[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me that you would be brought up under My eye [i.e., observation and care].
Mūsā, a baby in a river, was raised under Allah's eye.
And how many a prophet [fought in battle and] with him fought many religious scholars. But they never lost assurance due to what afflicted them in the cause of Allāh, nor did they weaken or submit. And Allāh loves the steadfast.
Those with the prophets never lost heart, never weakened, never gave in. And Allah loves the steadfast.
Today's mission
Find which of the five you are in right now. Then do one thing that fits it today: if it is a test, ask Allah to help you pass it rather than only to remove it; if your circle is shrinking, message one person who reminds you of Allah; if no one is watching, do one good deed that no one will ever know about.
Duas and dhikr
When you feel overwhelmed
Ḥasbunallāhu wa niʿmal-wakīl.
Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.
Quran 3:173
Asking Allah to keep your heart firm
Yā muqallibal-qulūb, thabbit qalbī ʿalā dīnik.
O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.

When worry and grief weigh on you
Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazan, wal-ʿajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa ḍalaʿid-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijāl.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by others.

Questions people ask
How do I know if Allah is preparing me for something?
No one can know Allah's plan for them with certainty. But the Quran shows a pattern with the people Allah raised: tests before honour (2:124), a quieter circle of righteous company (18:28), unseen beginnings, protection in danger, and steadfastness through hardship (3:146). If you are patient and grateful in these, it is good for you whatever comes (Sahih Muslim 2999).
Does hardship mean Allah loves me?
Hardship alone is not proof of anything, but the Prophet ﷺ taught that the most tested people are the prophets, then those most like them, and that a person is tested according to the strength of their faith (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2398). How you respond to the test is what matters.
What does Allah say to someone who feels like giving up?
He describes believers who were shaken until they asked, “When is the help of Allāh?”, and answers: “Unquestionably, the help of Allāh is near” (2:214). He also says He loves the steadfast, those who keep going even while hurt (3:146).
