Feeling far from Allah: the way back is shorter than you think

You stopped praying, or you pray and feel nothing. The Quran's answer is not guilt. It is an invitation from a Lord who says He is near, and who runs to the one who walks to Him.

Maybe you used to pray and stopped. Maybe you still pray but feel nothing. Maybe you did something you are ashamed of and feel you cannot face Allah. Many believers go through this, including people who look very religious from the outside.

Before anything else, notice this: you are reading a page about coming back to Allah. That desire is itself a sign that the connection is not gone.

Ayahs for this

And when My servants ask you, [O Muḥammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.

When people ask the Prophet ﷺ questions in this surah, the answer usually begins “Say…”. Here there is no “Say”. Allah answers directly: “I am near.”

And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.

Allah is closer to you than your jugular vein. Distance is felt from our side, not His.

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

Addressed to people who have “transgressed against themselves”: do not despair of Allah's mercy.

Allah runs to the one who walks

In a hadith qudsi, the Prophet ﷺ reported that Allah says:

“I am as My servant thinks I am, and I am with him when he remembers Me… If he draws near to Me a hand's span, I draw near to him an arm's length. If he draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a fathom's length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 7405, Sahih Muslim 2675 · Sahih

You do not need to fix everything before you return. You need to take one step. The hadith promises that whatever step you take, Allah's response is greater.

Small and steady beats big and broken

When people try to come back, they often try to change everything overnight, burn out in a week and feel even further away. The Prophet ﷺ taught the opposite:

“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are small.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 6464, Sahih Muslim 783 · Sahih

A seven-day way back

  1. Day 1: Pray just one prayer on time with full attention. Only one.
  2. Day 2: After that prayer, talk to Allah in your own language for two minutes. Tell Him you feel far.
  3. Day 3: Read 2:186 and 50:16 slowly, with their meaning.
  4. Day 4: Add a second prayer on time.
  5. Day 5: Say astaghfirullāh 100 times, spread through the day.
  6. Day 6: Read 39:53 and make a sincere tawbah for what weighs on you most.
  7. Day 7: Do one hidden good deed that nobody will ever know about.

Asking Allah to keep your heart firm

The dua of Yunus from the darkness

Lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innī kuntu minaẓ-ẓālimīn.

There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.

Sit with this

When did you last feel close to Allah? What were you doing, and what is one small piece of that you could bring back this week?

Common questions

Why do I feel nothing when I pray?

Many believers go through periods of dryness in worship. Keep praying: consistency is beloved to Allah even when feeling is absent (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464). Understanding what you recite, and making personal dua after prayer, often brings the feeling back with time.

Will Allah forgive me after everything I have done?

Allah addresses those who have transgressed against themselves and says: “Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins” (39:53). Sincere repentance is always open until death or the sun rising from the west.
