Anxiety: what the Quran says to a restless heart

Anxiety is not a sign of weak faith. The Quran shows prophets feeling fear, and gives the anxious heart a place to rest, a way to act and a Lord who is near.

If your chest feels tight, your thoughts keep racing ahead to things that have not happened, and you are tired of being told to just have more iman, this page is for you.

Feeling anxious does not mean your faith is broken. The Quran tells us that Musa, one of the greatest prophets, felt fear in his heart when the magicians threw their ropes: “And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Musa” (20:67). Allah did not rebuke him for the feeling. He answered it: “Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior” (20:68).

So the question is not how do I never feel anxious. It is where does an anxious heart go? The Quran gives a clear answer, in layers.

Ayahs for this

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allāh. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allāh hearts are assured."

Allah names the one place hearts find real rest, and the grammar of the ayah makes it exclusive.

5For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease [i.e., relief]. 6Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.

Ease does not only come after hardship. It comes with it, and it is promised twice.

Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."

What you are carrying has been measured. You were not given more than you can bear.

2And when they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or part with them according to acceptable terms. And bring to witness two just men from among you and establish the testimony for [the acceptance of] Allāh. That is instructed to whoever should believe in Allāh and the Last Day. And whoever fears Allāh - He will make for him a way out 3And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allāh - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allāh will accomplish His purpose. Allāh has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.

This promise sits in the middle of rulings on divorce, one of life's most painful moments. When you cannot see a way out, Allah makes one, and provides from where you did not expect.

If you do not aid him [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] - Allāh has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allāh is with us." And Allāh sent down His tranquility upon him and supported him with soldiers [i.e., angels] you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allāh - that is the highest. And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

The Prophet ﷺ in the cave, with enemies at the entrance: “Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.”

The Prophet ﷺ in the cave

During the migration to Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr hid in the cave of Thawr while the people searching for them stood close enough to see them if they looked down. Abu Bakr was afraid, not for himself but for the Prophet ﷺ. The reply he received has comforted anxious believers for fourteen centuries:

“O Abu Bakr, what do you think of two, the third of whom is Allah?”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3653, Sahih Muslim 2381 · Sahih

Notice what the Prophet ﷺ did not say. He did not say the danger was not real. The enemy really was at the door. He moved Abu Bakr's attention from the size of the danger to the nearness of Allah. The Quran records the same moment: “Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us” (9:40), and then: “And Allah sent down His tranquillity (sakīnah) upon him.”

Trust and effort go together

Some people hear “trust Allah” as “do nothing”. That is not the Islamic idea of tawakkul. A man once asked the Prophet ﷺ whether he should tie his camel or leave it untied and trust Allah. He replied:

“Tie it, and trust (in Allah).”
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2517 · Hasan

For anxiety, that means doing what is in your hands, then handing the outcome to Allah. That includes seeking treatment. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allah has not sent down any disease without also sending down its cure.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5678 · Sahih

Seeing a counsellor or doctor for anxiety is not a lack of faith. It is tying the camel.

Practical steps for today

  1. Name it to Allah. Ya'qub said “I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah” (12:86). You are allowed to tell Him exactly how you feel.
  2. Separate what is in your hands from what is not. Write two lists. Act on the first. Make dua over the second.
  3. Give your mind a place to land. When the thoughts spiral, slowly repeat ḥasbunallāhu wa niʿmal-wakīl, or read 13:28 and 94:5–6 aloud.
  4. Keep the small routines. The five prayers break the day into short stretches you can manage one at a time.
  5. Talk to someone. A trusted friend, an imam or a counsellor. If you are in crisis, get help now.

Duas

When worry and grief weigh on you

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazan, wal-ʿajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa ḍalaʿid-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijāl.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by others.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6369 · Sahih

When you feel overwhelmed

Ḥasbunallāhu wa niʿmal-wakīl.

Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.

Quran 3:173

The dua of Yunus from the darkness

Lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innī kuntu minaẓ-ẓālimīn.

There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.

Quran 21:87; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3505 · Tirmidhi's narration graded sahih by al-Albani

Sit with this

Think of one hardship you were sure would break you, years ago. What ease came with it that you did not notice at the time?

Common questions

Is anxiety a sign of weak iman?

No. The Quran describes Musa feeling fear (20:67) and Ya'qub's deep grief (12:84–86). Feelings are part of being human. Faith shapes what you do with them and where you turn.

Is it okay for a Muslim to take medication or see a therapist for anxiety?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah sent down a cure for every disease (Sahih al-Bukhari 5678) and encouraged seeking treatment. Taking the means is part of tawakkul, not opposed to it.

Which dua is best for anxiety?

The Prophet ﷺ regularly sought refuge from worry and grief with the dua in Sahih al-Bukhari 6369 (included on this page). The dua of Yunus (21:87) and ḥasbunallāhu wa niʿmal-wakīl (3:173) are also powerful.
