Grief and loss: the Quran for a broken heart

Islam does not ask you to hide your tears. The Prophet ﷺ wept for his son. The Quran gives grief a direction: from the loss, back to the One we all return to.

Whether you have lost a parent, a child, a friend, a marriage or a future you had pictured, grief can make the world feel unreal. Some people around you may tell you to be patient before you have even had time to cry.

Patience (ṣabr) in Islam does not mean feeling nothing. The Prophet ﷺ cried. Ya'qub cried until his eyes turned white (12:84). Patience means holding on to Allah while you hurt.

Ayahs for this

155And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, 156Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allāh, and indeed to Him we will return." 157Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.

Loss is named before it happens, and those who say innā lillāh are promised blessings, mercy and guidance.

He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh, and I know from Allāh that which you do not know.

Ya'qub shows where grief is allowed to go: “I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah.”

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

Every soul will taste death, and this world is not where the full reward is given.

5For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease [i.e., relief]. 6Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.

Ease travels with hardship, and one hardship is met by two eases.

How the Prophet ﷺ grieved

When his infant son Ibrahim was dying, the Prophet ﷺ held him and his eyes filled with tears. A companion was surprised to see him weep. He said:

“The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord. O Ibrahim, we are saddened by your departure.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1303 · Sahih

This one sentence is a complete guide to grieving as a Muslim. Tears are allowed. Sadness is allowed. What we guard is our tongue: we do not say words of anger against Allah's decree.

What innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn really means

We say it so often that we can miss what it says. Innā lillāh: we, and everything we love, belong to Allah. What was taken was never fully ours; it was entrusted to us. Wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn: and we are returning to Him. The separation is not the end of the story. The person you lost went ahead on a road you are also walking.

Allah describes the people who say this in hardship and then says: “Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided” (2:157).

Your pain is not wasted

“No fatigue, illness, worry, grief, harm or distress befalls a Muslim, not even a thorn that pricks him, except that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5641, Sahih Muslim 2573 · Sahih

Practical steps

  1. Let yourself cry. It is the Sunnah, not a weakness.
  2. Say the dua of Umm Salamah (below). She said it after losing her husband, and Allah replaced him with the Prophet ﷺ.
  3. Do something for them. Make dua for them, give charity on their behalf, or continue a good deed they loved.
  4. Accept help. Let people bring food and sit with you. That is what the Muslim community is for.
  5. Grief has no deadline. If months later you still cannot function, speak to a counsellor. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, get help now.

Duas

When you lose someone or something

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Allāhumma ʾjurnī fī muṣībatī wa akhlif lī khayran minhā.

We belong to Allah and to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and replace it for me with something better.

Sahih Muslim 918 · Sahih

When worry and grief weigh on you

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazan, wal-ʿajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa ḍalaʿid-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijāl.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by others.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6369 · Sahih

Sit with this

What is one thing the person or thing you lost gave you that you can carry forward as a good deed in their name?

Common questions

Is it haram to cry when someone dies?

No. The Prophet ﷺ cried at the death of his son Ibrahim (Sahih al-Bukhari 1303). What is prohibited is wailing, tearing clothes and words that object to Allah's decree.

How long should a Muslim grieve?

Feelings of grief have no fixed limit. The formal mourning period (iḥdād) is three days, except for a widow, whose mourning period is four months and ten days (2:234). Sadness can last much longer, and that is human.

What dua should I say after losing someone?

Say innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn followed by Allāhumma ʾjurnī fī muṣībatī wa akhlif lī khayran minhā (Sahih Muslim 918). It is included on this page with its meaning.
