The one thing to remember
Your provision was written before you were born and comes from Allah, not from a feeling or a frequency. Real wealth is a content heart. Gratitude, taqwā, istighfār and giving are the doors the Quran and Sunnah name for more.
Rizq is bigger than money
In the Quran, rizq is everything Allah gives that keeps you going: food, health, safety, people who love you, knowledge, time, faith itself. Money is one small part of it.
And it is not a lottery. Allah says that there is no creature on earth except that its provision is upon Him (11:6). Your share was written for you before you took your first breath. That should take a weight off you: you are responsible for the effort, and Allah is responsible for the result.
The Prophet ﷺ gave us a way to measure what we already have:
“Whoever among you wakes up secure in his home, healthy in his body, and has his food for the day, it is as if the whole world has been gathered for him.”
Read that slowly. Safe, well, fed for today. By the Prophet's ﷺ measure, most people reading this are holding the world.
Real wealth is in the heart
“Richness is not having many possessions. Richness is the richness of the soul.”
Some people with a large salary feel poor every single day, because there is always someone with more. Some people with very little feel rich, because their heart has stopped chasing. The Prophet ﷺ gave a simple method for the second kind of heart: “Look at those below you, and do not look at those above you, for that is more likely to keep you from belittling Allah's blessings upon you” (Sahih Muslim 2963).
The Quran says the same thing from another angle. It tells the Prophet ﷺ not to stretch his eyes towards the worldly comforts given to others, because they are only a test, and “the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring” (20:131).
Gratitude is the door to more
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'"
This is a promise from Allah, not a law of attraction. The increase is His gift, in the form and at the time He chooses: sometimes more money, sometimes more barakah in less, sometimes more of what you actually needed.
Classical scholars described shukr as working in three places at once: the heart recognises that the blessing is from Allah, the tongue praises Him for it, and the limbs use it in ways that please Him. So gratitude is not only a feeling. It is saying alḥamdulillāh for the small things, and spending your health, time and money on what is good.
Notice the words of Sulaymān when he saw a throne brought to him in the blink of an eye: “This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful” (27:40). He treated even a miracle as a test of thankfulness. You can say the same over a paycheck, a meal, or a small coin you found.
When money is tight
Worrying about rent is not a sin, and it is not disbelief. The Prophet's ﷺ own household went two months without lighting a cooking fire, living on dates and water (Sahih al-Bukhari 6459). He sought refuge in Allah from poverty, and he also worked, traded and planned. Struggle with money is not proof that Allah is displeased with you.
What the Quran warns against is letting fear run your life. “Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allāh promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty” (2:268). That fear is what pushes people to cut corners, take interest, stop giving, or envy others. The answer is to keep doing what is right with what you have, and to remember who is really providing.
When Zakariya found fresh provision with Maryam that he had not brought, he asked where it came from. Her answer was simple: “It is from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh provides for whom He wills without account” (3:37). Seeing her blessing did not make him bitter. It moved him to ask Allah for his own, right there (3:38).
The doors the Quran names
- Taqwā. Whoever is mindful of Allah, He makes a way out for them and provides for them from where they do not expect (65:2-3).
- Istighfār. Nūḥ told his people to seek forgiveness, and Allah would send rain, wealth and children (71:10-12).
- Giving. Whatever you spend for Allah, He replaces it (34:39), and the Prophet ﷺ said charity does not decrease wealth (Sahih Muslim 2588).
- Family ties. Whoever would like his provision to be expanded should keep ties with his relatives (Sahih al-Bukhari 5986).
- Trust with effort. If you relied on Allah as He should be relied on, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds, who go out hungry in the morning and return full (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2344). The birds still leave the nest.
A common mix-up
What people often think
Abundance is a mindset or a frequency: feel rich and wealth is attracted to you, and if you feel scarcity you are being ungrateful, even disbelieving.
What the sources show
Provision comes from Allah by His decree, not from your energy. Gratitude does bring increase, because Allah promised it (14:7), and it lives in the heart, the tongue and your actions. Being anxious about money is a human struggle, not kufr. The Prophet ﷺ himself sought refuge from poverty.
The ayahs behind this
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'"
Allah's own promise: gratitude brings increase.
And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allāh is its provision, and He knows its place of dwelling and place of storage. All is in a clear register.
Every living creature's provision is Allah's responsibility, including yours.
Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allāh promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allāh is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
The fear of poverty is one of Shayṭān's oldest tools. Allah answers it with forgiveness and bounty.
So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?" She said, "It is from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh provides for whom He wills without account."
Maryam's answer when asked where her provision came from: it is from Allah.
Say, "Indeed, my Lord extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts [it] for him. But whatever thing you spend [in His cause] - He will compensate it; and He is the best of providers."
Whatever you spend for Allah, He replaces.
Today's mission
Tonight, before you sleep, write down three blessings you have that money did not buy, and say alḥamdulillāh for each one. Then give something today, even a very small amount, with the intention that it is for Allah.

When you feel overwhelmed

SubḥānAllāhi wa biḥamdihī.

Questions people ask
What does rizq mean in Islam?
Rizq is everything Allah provides that sustains you: food, money, health, family, knowledge and faith. The Quran says every creature's provision is upon Allah (11:6), and the Sunnah teaches that each person's share is written before birth.
Does gratitude really increase rizq?
Yes. Allah says: “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]” (14:7). The increase may be more wealth, more barakah in what you have, or a blessing you did not expect. Gratitude means recognising the blessing in your heart, praising Allah for it, and using it well.
Is it a sin to worry about money?
No. Worry is human, and the Prophet ﷺ himself sought refuge in Allah from poverty. What the Quran warns against is letting the fear of poverty push you into wrongdoing or stop you from giving (2:268).
