Lost your spark? How Allah brings a tired heart back to life

Life looks fine on paper, but the excitement is gone: wake, work, sleep, repeat. The Quran speaks to exactly this, and places the answer right next to an image of dead earth coming back to life.

A playful illustration of cracked dry earth where rain is falling from a soft cloud, and bright green shoots and little flowers are springing up wherever the drops land, under a warming sunrise.

The one thing to remember

Losing your spark is human; even the companions felt their hearts change. Allah answers it in two ayahs side by side: has the time not come for your heart to soften (57:16), and know that Allah gives life to the earth after it dies (57:17). The One who revives dead ground can revive you.

You remember a version of yourself who got excited. About a new idea, about Ramadan coming, about an ordinary morning. Now the days run together: wake up, reply to messages, work, eat, sleep. Nothing is wrong, exactly. You still pray. Your life looks fine on paper. But something has gone quiet inside, and you are not sure when it happened.

If that is you, the Quran has an ayah with your name on it.

Has the time not come?

Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allāh and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient.

Notice who this is addressed to: those who have believed. Not disbelievers, not sinners in general. People of faith whose hearts had slowly gone flat, and Allah warns them of what happens when a long period passed over them: the heart hardens without anyone noticing.

That is how a spark goes out. Not in one dramatic moment, but through a long period: the same routine, the same distractions, prayers done on autopilot, until the heart that used to tremble at the Quran feels nothing at all. It is reported that al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ, who was a highway robber, heard a man reciting this ayah one night and said, Yes, my Lord, the time has come, and turned his whole life around. He became one of the great worshippers of his age. The ayah still has that power.

Why the next ayah is about dead earth

Know that Allāh gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. We have made clear to you the signs; perhaps you will understand.

Right after describing hardened hearts, Allah turns to the earth. Ibn Kathīr explains the link: just as Allah revives dry, dead ground with rain, He softens hearts after they have hardened and guides them after they have strayed.

Think of land after a long dry season. Cracked, grey, no sign of life. Then rain comes, and within days there is green everywhere. The seeds were there the whole time. They were waiting for water. Allah tells us to “observe the effects of the mercy of Allāh - how He gives life to the earth after its lifelessness” (30:50).

Your heart is not dead. It is dry. And Allah has told you what the rain is: “O you who have believed, respond to Allāh and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life” (8:24). Life, in the Quran, comes from the remembrance of Allah, the Quran itself, and the way of the Prophet ﷺ.

Even the companions felt this

Ḥanẓalah, a companion, once ran out crying that he had become a hypocrite. With the Prophet ﷺ, he said, he felt as if he could see Paradise and Hell. Back home with his wife, children and work, he forgot much of it. Abū Bakr admitted he felt the same. The Prophet ﷺ told them that if they stayed in that state all the time, the angels would shake their hands in the street, “but, Ḥanẓalah, there is a time for this and a time for that” (Sahih Muslim 2750).

So the dip itself is not a disaster. Hearts rise and fall. The Prophet ﷺ said: “For everything there is a zeal, and for every zeal there is a slackening” (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2453, graded hasan). In a narration in Musnad Aḥmad he adds that whoever's slackening leads to his Sunnah is rightly guided. The question is not whether your spark will fade sometimes. It is where you land when it does.

How to let the rain in

  1. Keep something small and constant. The Prophet ﷺ said the deeds most beloved to Allah are the most consistent, even if small (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464). Do not wait to feel inspired. Pick one thing, a page of Quran, two rakʿahs at night, ten minutes of dhikr, and keep it through the flat days. That is your lull landing on the Sunnah.
  2. Read the Quran to feel, not to finish. Allah describes those whose skins shiver at His Book and “then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance [i.e., mention] of Allāh” (39:23). Read slowly, in a translation you understand, and stop at the ayah that touches you. One ayah felt is worth more than a juz rushed.
  3. Ask Allah directly. The Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from al-ʿajz wal-kasal, helplessness and laziness (Sahih al-Bukhari 6363), and he often asked Allah to keep his heart firm. A tired heart is exactly what dua is for. Tell Allah plainly: I have lost my spark. Give it back to me.
  4. Remember Him in the ordinary moments. “Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allāh hearts are assured” (13:28). Dhikr on the commute, alḥamdulillāh over your food, SubḥānAllāh at a sunset. Small, frequent drops of rain.
  5. Let yourself enjoy the good things again. Being serious about your deen does not mean losing your joy. The Prophet ﷺ smiled often, joked truthfully, and raced his wife ʿĀʾishah (Sunan Abi Dawud 2578). He said even “your smiling in the face of your brother is charity” (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1956). Laugh with your family. It is part of a living heart, not a distraction from it.

A dua for your spark

Yā Allāh, You give life to the earth after it dies. Give life back to my heart. Let me feel Your words again when I hear them. Let me laugh with the people I love and mean it. Let me wake up with something to look forward to, and let the thing I look forward to most be You. Yā muqallib al-qulūb, thabbit qalbī ʿalā dīnik: O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm on Your religion.

If the flatness has lasted for weeks, if you are struggling to get out of bed, eat, or feel anything at all, that may be more than a dip in iman. Depression is real, and seeking help is part of tying your camel. Please look at our get help page, and read what the Quran says to an anxious heart.

A common mix-up

What people often think

If I have lost my spiritual high, my iman is gone, or I have become a hypocrite.

What the sources show

Hearts naturally rise and fall. Ḥanẓalah feared exactly this, and the Prophet ﷺ reassured him: there is a time for this and a time for that (Sahih Muslim 2750). What matters is holding on to small, consistent deeds through the low times, and asking Allah to revive your heart.

The ayahs behind this

Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allāh and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient.

A gentle call: has the time not come for your heart to soften again at the remembrance of Allah?

O you who have believed, respond to Allāh and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allāh intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.

Allah and His Messenger call you to what gives you life.

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allāh. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allāh hearts are assured."

By the remembrance of Allah, hearts find rest.

Today's mission

Tonight, read 57:16-17 slowly in Arabic and English. Then choose one small deed you will keep every day for the next month, even on the days you feel nothing, and ask Allah in your own words to give you your spark back.

Duas and dhikr

Asking Allah to keep your heart firm

Yā muqallibal-qulūb, thabbit qalbī ʿalā dīnik.

O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2140 · Graded sahih by al-Albani

When worry and grief weigh on you

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazan, wal-ʿajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa ḍalaʿid-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijāl.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by others.

Questions people ask

Why do I feel spiritually numb or empty?

The Quran describes hearts that harden over a long period (57:16): routine, distraction and neglect slowly dull them. It is a common human experience, even among the companions (Sahih Muslim 2750). Allah follows it immediately with the reminder that He gives life to the earth after it dies (57:17), and He can do the same for your heart.

How can I increase my iman when it feels low?

Keep a small deed consistently, since the most beloved deeds to Allah are the most regular even if small (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464). Read the Quran slowly with understanding, remember Allah often (13:28), make dua for a soft heart, and spend time with people who remind you of Allah.

Is losing motivation in Islam a sign of hypocrisy?

No. When Ḥanẓalah feared he had become a hypocrite because his feelings faded at home, the Prophet ﷺ told him there is a time for this and a time for that (Sahih Muslim 2750). Hypocrisy is hiding disbelief, not having a tired heart.
